Mom’s the word

How to talk to your mom about sensitive issues.

Your thoughts (107) Mom’s the word

Eish! Mothers! We love them but it just seems like there’s no way to make them understand us. Arg! But you know what we’ve also discovered? Everything you are going through now, they’ve experienced before. Still, talking to mom can be a bit scary, so What’s a girl to do?

Break the ice
Find a topic that will make her laugh or smile, like something silly that she says you used to do when you were a kid. If you can’t think of a memory, talk about her favourite TV show. Topics like these are called icebreakers. They’re a great way to start a conversation.

Be honest
One of the most difficult conversations of my life was when I had to talk to my mom about sex. Yoh! She loves telling me (and everyone) that I was a curious child so one day, she found me in our cupboard, eating flour. I used that as an icebreaker, then said, “Mom, I’m still curious but now that I’m older, I know that I have to know what I’m getting into.” I then explained to her that at 17, I’ve started thinking a lot about sex and what’s true and false about it.

Tip: If you are uncomfortable, pretended like you’re asking for a friend.

Choose the right time and place
If you want someone’s attention, don’t approach them when they’re busy with someone or in a hurry to get somewhere. The same applies to talking to your mom about sensitive issues. Tell her that you have something important to talk to her about and when she will have time to give you her full attention.

If you’re still wondering just how to talk to your mom? Take a deep breath and practise what you’re going to say in front of the mirror.
