Your story: Girl on fire

Going after my dreams.

Your thoughts (2) Your story: Girl on fire

“Looks like a girl, but she's a flame. So bright, she can burn your eyes. Better look the other way. You can try but you'll never forget her name. She's on top of the world.” - Alicia Keys, Girl on Fire.

Alicia’s singing about me, Aphalele. I have a one-way ticket to success as a businesswoman. It’s just an idea for now, but that’s how action starts anyway; with a thought.

I want to open a salon and start a fashion line. And like I say, I believe it’s going to happen because I’m going to make it happen.

I started with sharing my dream with my mom. When people know what you are thinking about and what you want to do, they’re likely to support you, give you tips, help you find start by talking!

The support I appreciate the most from my mother is that she keeps encouraging me to keep my eye on my goals. She gives me advice about life. She tells me to stay from boys. She warns me about situations that can lead me down the wrong road, like peer pressure and not prioritising my school work.

This is showing me that when we have goals, it’s not just important to work on them. It’s also important to know what not to do, like only being interested in building your social life.

I know I still have a long way to go to being the next David Tlale, but every step, no matter how small, counts when you are walking towards your dreams.
