Dare to try again

...and get closer to your dreams.

We all have the right to education, even girls who, like me, stopped going to school. Maybe it’s because you fell pregnant, failed and lost the motivation to try again, or your parents didn’t have enough money for you to continue your education. I’ve decided to continue with my education next year.I want to show my child that paths may take an unexpected turn but she should never give up on her dreams.

After considering my options, studying by correspondence is the best option for me because it’s flexible so I can keep working as a hairdresser and look after my baby. Here are some colleges that allow you study from home! Private colleges, Intec and Damelin offer grades 10 - 12. Both colleges have campuses around the country, and offer face-to-face tests and support.

Star Schools High is only available in Jozi. You can study individual subjects or an entire grade. This is great if you want to improve marks for certain subjects.

There’s also ABET, which holds classes in different communities around the country. So you’ll have daily classes and support! You can also consider going to a college for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. Instead of getting a traditional grade 12 qualification, you study courses like Engineering and learn skills while at school.

Ready to try again? Mzansi has a huge problem with fly-by-night schools which are not registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), making their qualifications worthless. So when you find a school, call SAQA to check that it’s registered. When going back to school part-time, learning how to manage your time becomes even more important. Have a study timetable, and set rules around your school time, even if school means being in your bedroom to complete an assignment.

Remember that just going back to school is winning!

Hey Springster, thank you for reaching out to us. We understand how hard it must be to be a mother and work through school at the same time. Have you considered schooling through ABET? It's a programme for adults who would like to finish their education. We think this could be a great option for you. If you like, you can copy and paste the link below to read about a Springster who went through an experience that was similar to yours. Perhaps her story will help motivate and inspire you. There are also links at the bottom of the story that will give you more information with regards to ABET.http://za.heyspringster.com/sections/my-future/how-i-finished-my-schooling-through-abet/
