What's it really like being a nurse?

A day in the life of a nurse.

Your thoughts (28)

Interested in becoming a nurse but not sure if it’s for you? You are not alone.

I’m Rekgotso, and even though I’m super excited about being in grade 12, I’m also little nervous about which career path to take. You see, I want to be nurse, but all I know about being one is that they help save lives.

My teacher suggested that I speak to a real nurse and find out what the jobs comes with.

This is where Portia comes in. She is one of my neighbors, and works at our local hospital.

She says that like many jobs in the health sector, to be a nurse, you have to study for it. You can go to a university, nursing college or private clinic like Mediclinic or Net care Education center.

To get into a study programme, you need to pass grade 12 maths and science.

And if you study through a public college or university, you could get government funding, through the Department of Social Development and the Department of Health. The best thing about this funding is that they pay for everything; accommodation, transport, school fees and food. They even give you a salary of R5 600 per month.

Do you know what else I found out? There are different kinds of nurses!

A registered nurse works in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This is where patients who need surgery go. In there, they prepare the doctor's tools like high blood pressure monitor and injections. They also help people that have been stabbed or are having a heart attack.

An enrolled nurse washes patients and gives them their medicine.

An Enrolled nursing auxiliary gives patients their food, cleans for them and washes them.

No matter the kind of nurse you are, your day will usually start at 6am or 7pm if you working the night shift. You then take over from the team that worked the previous shift. You look after all the patients in your ward making sure that they have eaten, had their medication, bathed and are ready for visiting hours.

In order to be a good nurse you have to be a good listener and be very patient because you are looking after sick people. They depend on you. Some patients will need to be prepared for surgery and other patients will need help exercising after a surgery. You are also responsible for that.

Throughout the day, patients will constantly need your help, so when you’re a nurse, you are sort of like a superhero - helping sick and injured people to get back to perfect health.

Hi zodwa. Thanks for your question. I think you should start researching the kinds of institutions you'd like to attend now so that by next year you're prepared and you've discussed fees and registration fees with your parents/guardians so they can make provisions for you.

Hi Tumiakio. Thanks for sharing your comment. I understand that you have restrictions with data and that you would like more advice. Unfortunately, because of safeguarding issues I cannot give you a list of places because I don't know where you are or what the circumstances are. In most instances I would signpost to the Childline or recommend you visit a clinic or a doctor for a professional medical opinion. If ever I've given you advice that you girls can already give one another that's because this is a community and girls can help each other out too and because I don't have the power to do more. I will recommend related articles where necessary but that's mostly all I can do. I will try and be more engaging and to give more information in future. Thanks

in fact am one of the Mentors in Rise young women's clubs.if u still remember u came in Khayelitsha football hope center,I'm not saying spoonfeed them but at least meet them half way .thank u

Hey Qu33n, if you click on the link below it will give you all the information you need about types of nurses and what kind of subjects you need to study nursing. https://educonnect.co.za/nursing-in-south-africa/

I've also considered studying nursing. The thing is I just can't stand the sight of blood and wounds, especially stab wounds. Will the college teach me how to deal with that? Or it should be a passion I'm born with?

Hi Springster, you should consider speaking to you teacher and asking him/her if you can upgrade your marks. Show your teacher that you are determined to work harder by asking more questions and engaging more in class. He/she will be more willing to help you. All the best!

Hi Nushka, thanks for your comment. We are so glad you are sure about what you want to do. Nursing is a very lovely profession and we believe in you and your dreams! If you're passionate about this career path, we believe you can overcome this fear of wounds and blood.

Working in a hospital and helping people who are sick has always been my dream .I wish I saw this before I articulated because it would have given me some sort of motivation.I know I was born to do nursing.I'm still trying to pressure my dream even though it's every challenging.Having a mentor would really be helpful as I don't really have one to guide me and give me advises.

Hello Giggly It is a good thing that you want a mentor. Sometimes a mentor can be someone close to you. Click on the link and read on mentors and role models. Look around you and see if there are people who inspire you. It can be a teacher, sister. http://za.heyspringster.com/sections/girl-stories/mentors-and-role-models/
