Winter is here, and while it’s fun to rock jackets and boots, there is another thing that can come with winter. I learned about it because my bestie Mbali seems to change every year in winter. She’s usually happy, outgoing and always smiles.
But when winter hits, she changes. She keeps to herself and she stops socialising. She says she feels like she’s living in a deep, dark hole. This change in feeling seems to happen to her at the same time every year.
You usually feel sad when it starts to get cold. The first thing you need to do is know that it is perfectly normal. Every person has a different way of coping with seasonal changes. Even though it’s also tough. This is why it’s important for us to support each other. When I realised that Mbali changes every year in winter, I talked to our teacher.
This made it possible for me to support Mbali. I try to be there for her as much as possible. I encouraged her to speak to an adult she trusts, like her mom or sister, as well as me when she is feeling low. We can help pick-her back up again by talking things through with her or taking things off her mind.
There are many people, girls, boys and adults, who feel like Mbali when winter comes. Just remember that spring will be back soon, and bring back sunshine and joy back to your life.
