I have been trying to eat healthily and exercise for more the past 2 years. In the past, I would exercise and eat well for a week; then I’d skip a day of exercise or eat a packet of chips and it would just go downhill from there. The next day and the day after that I’d carry on eating junk food and not exercising. I struggled to carry on after I had a setback.
It made me miserable that I couldn’t maintain a healthy lifestyle. My best friend, Vuyiswa, told me that she also wanted to start taking better care of herself. She suggested that we try being healthier together because we’d support each other and we would be accountable to someone.
We made rules for ourselves that we had to keep too:

Being healthier was easier with Vuyiswa by my side because we kept each other motivated. When I felt like binging, I would call her to tell her how I was feeling and she’d remind me of the commitment I’d made. Vuyiswa didn’t like exercising so we came up with fun exercises that we could do together that she’d enjoy too, like exercises that involved dancing, Zumba and we would play netball once a week.
The first few months weren’t easy because we had to let go of a lot of our eating habits but we continued to support each other. The more we stuck with it - the easier it became. We actually looked forward to exercising together.
Vuyiswa and I both found that we had more energy and weren’t falling asleep in class anymore. I felt happier and stronger.
