Your thoughts (22) University education 101

Education is not the only way to success but it helps to open doors. This is why it’s important to study further. Dimpho is super excited to finally finish high school. But she doesn’t really know what’s next.

Decisions, decisions
Deciding where to study depends on what you want to study. If you want to be a medical doctor, you have to go to university. If you want to be an accountant, you can go to a university of technology.

There are also colleges that offer courses you can complete in six months, or a year. Don’t settle for just anything. Visit the school and talk to people who went there, and make sure that this is the right option for you.

You don’t have to be 100 percent sure of what you will study and what you want your career to be right now. If you can, attend a career expo . You can also get guidance from organisations like Ikamva Youth, or speak to a career counsellor.

Finding a little help
Our friend Noma wants to be a lawyer, but her parents can’t afford to send her to university. But this doesn’t mean she won’t go to university! She asked for information about bursaries and has already applied for a few.

Be prepared
Although you might find your dream school, you might not be accepted or it might be outside of your price range. It’s always a good idea to have back up, like doing a learnership.

Moving forward
Not every girl can finish school when they wish to; life happens. Perhaps you became a mother and had to stop studying for a while. You can still go back to school. You can correspond through colleges like Lyceum, which helps you to study from home. If you have not completed Matric, think about ABET, which provides adult basic education in different communities. Remember to always check if the school you want to go to is registered and approved to provide education. If you go to a fly by night, your qualification will not be valid.

Good luck!
