My name is Jade and ever since I knew what a sewing machine was, I wanted to make clothes. When I was ten years old my grandmother taught me how to sew with a needle and thread. She also taught me how to knit and crochet.
By the time I turned 16, I graduated from making dolls clothes to making clothes for myself and taking orders from girls in my neighbourhood. My mother didn’t have a lot of money, so she couldn’t afford to send me to design school. I really wanted to be a fashion designer. I wanted to make bridesmaid’s and matric dance dresses.
I decided that not having money for my studies is not going to get me down. I started making posters of my work and I put them up all around my community. Orders for my dresses almost tripled, everybody wanted a matric farewell dress made by Jade Du Pont. I saved half of my profits and gave the other to my mother to help around the house. I taught myself to make men’s clothes too so I started taking orders for formal shirts and pants.
It took me two years of making clothes day and night to finally afford my first year of fees for university. My mom was so happy when we went to register, her daughter was officially a fashion student. It wasn’t always easy but I worked hard to make my dream come true.
