Who do you turn to when you can’t ask your mom, and your best friends are just as clueless? We have seen some of your most pressing concerns. We are here for you Springsters!

Here are your sex questions, answered.

Q: How soon after having unprotected sex will I know if I am pregnant

A: The earliest signs of pregnancy usually pop up at 6 to 12 days after your egg has been fertilised. This is when spotting occurs. Spotting can look like a light period with less flow and a lighter colour. It usually ends quicker than your normal period would. It is hard to tell when your egg has been fertilised. You can only confirm a pregnancy by taking a home pregnancy test or by going to the doctor. You can prevent unwanted pregnancies by using a condom every time you have sex.

Q: Can I get STI’s from having oral sex?

A: It is a myth that you cannot contract a Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) from giving or receiving oral sex. Giving and receiving oral sex is actually the most common way that STI’s are transmitted. You can contract an STI even if you only have one partner, but having multiple partners can increase your chances. Common STI’s that you can get from oral sex include gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia and genital herpes. You can protect yourself from these infections by using a condom when giving or receiving oral sex. You can get condoms at no cost at your nearest clinic or hospital.

Q: Using a latex (normal) condom hurts me, what else can I use?

A: Some women are sensitive to latex (the material that condoms are made of) and using them can cause a lot of pain. But what’s a girl to do when she wants to protect herself from STI’s including HIV and unwanted pregnancies? There are other options out there if you’re looking for an alternative to latex condoms. Polyurethane condoms are condoms that are made from a special kind of plastic. They can protect you from unwanted pregnancies and STI’s including HIV. The female condom is a latex free and low cost alternative.
