Your thoughts (6) 5 ways to fit in exercise on a tight schedule

We all wish we could exercise often but our lives are pretty busy - there’s school, friends, clubs, chores and everything in between. And honestly, there’s always something else we could be doing rather than exercising.

But there are lots of benefits to exercising; it helps you focus. It also makes you happier because when you exercise your body releases dopamine which is the "happy" hormone.

So here are a few ways that you can exercise while you do your chores if you can’t put time aside just for exercising during the day:

Getting started

Set a timer for 30 minutes, put together an upbeat playlist or put on the radio and listen to your favourite radio station. Wear clothing that is comfortable that allows you to move comfortably in it and wear shoes that you won’t slip in while exercising. Now you’re ready to get started!

Waiting for your friends

There is always that one friend that is always late. They will have you waiting for ages, well, when you are waiting, why not exercise. This is a great time to work your upper arms and shoulders. Put on some uptempo music and start flexing your ab muscles. You can find heavy items like a 10kg bag of rice or flour and then pick it up and down. Don’t bend to pick up things - squat. Remember to use both arms because only using one side will result in uneven muscles. Extend your arms as far as you possibly can.

Running upstairs

Instead of taking a slow stroll, run up the stairs 5 - 10 times. This will help make your workout more intense and get your heart racing. When you’re picking up stuff from the floor squat. Squatting improves strength training.

If you don’t have stairs to run up, instead of walking you can do lunges. This will work your hips, thighs and buttocks. Keep you back straight, bend your knees (they mustn't go past your toes) and lunge from one room to the next.

Knee-up while you wait

While you wait for the kettle to boil to make yourself tea, you have a spare 5 mins - you can use it to do 10 knee ups. If you still have time, you can lean on the edge of the counter and do set of standing press-ups. - they’re basically push -ups standing and against the counter instead of the floor. Make sure it’s dry because you don’t want to slip!

Calf raises while washing dishes

Instead of just standing while washing the dishes, do calf raises. Legs must be hips width apart. Stand on your toes for 3 - 10 seconds and the very slowly come down. Do this 3 sets of 10 of this exercise. Don’t forget to rest for 1 minute in between sets.

There you go, now you can exercise even though you are busy . Don’t forget to hydrate and stretch!

Remember, exercise can give you that extra confidence and self-esteem boost. For a more confident you, fit in exercise into your lifestyle, whether it is by cleaning, playing a sport or going to gym.

Create a schedule for when you do it - you can also use that time you are working out to repeat affirmations like “I am smart” and “ I am beautiful” to become a more self-confident you!
